1,671 new Covid-19 infections with 40pc from Selangor

KUALA LUMPUR: The country logged 1,671 new Covid-19 infections up to noon yesterday, with Selangor taking the top spot.

The Health Ministry said the total number of active cases stood at 14,442, and of the new cases, only two were imported.

Almost 40 per cent of new cases were reported in Selangor (652 cases), followed by Penang (328), Sarawak (154) and Johor (130).

Perlis and Putrajaya reported no new cases, while Labuan and Pahang reported three each.

Four more deaths were reported, bringing the total number of Covid-19 fatalities to 1,229.

A total of 151 patients are being treated at Intensive Care Units, including 64 on ventilator­s.

A total of 1,585 patients were discharged yesterday, bringing total recoveries to 316,042.

Four new clusters were recorded yesterday, with two linked to community transmissi­ons and two to workplaces

At 39 cases, Johor’s Taman Perindustr­ian Pekan Nanas factory cluster recorded the highest number of cases among the new clusters. The cases were detected following a targeted screening exercise involving 212 workers.

The Teluk Tawar workplace cluster involving an education centre recorded two new cases. This brings the number of active cases linked to the cluster to 33 out of 335 tests conducted.

The index case for the cluster is a 59-year-old Malaysian. He tested positive on March 12 after a symptomati­c screening on March 3.

The index case of the Tanjung Genting cluster in Meradong, Sarawak, is a 66-year-old Malaysian who tested positive on March 13. He began showing symptoms on March 8.

The cluster reported three new cases, bringing the number of active cases to 22 out of 66 tests.

The Pulau Pisang cluster in Perak saw four new cases, bringing the active number of cases to 15 out of 41 tests.

Its index case is a 29-year-old Malaysian who tested positive on March 9. He was symptomati­c since Feb 28.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 421 active clusters, with 871 ending yesterday.

“A total of 53 clusters recorded new cases yesterday.

“The cluster with the highest number of new cases is the DTI Juru (Juru Immigratio­n Depot) cluster at 206 cases, followed by the Freesia Constructi­on cluster (134) and Pekan Nanas cluster (39).”

He said 236 cases (14.1 per cent) reported yesterday were linked to prison or detention centre clusters, including the Jalan Harapan Prison (24), Pengkalan Chepa (two) and DTI Sepang 2 (one) clusters.

The DTI Juru cluster was first reported on Friday.

It recorded the highest number of cases among the new clusters that day, with 167 people testing positive following targeted screenings of detainees at the Immigratio­n depot in Seberang Perai Tengah on March 9.
