Review safety aspects at construction sites, contractors told
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) reminded contractors to review all safety aspects at construction sites to ensure the wellbeing of the workers and the public.
Niosh deputy chairman Datuk T. Mohan said the role of competent safety and health officers at construction sites was vital to ensure the area was safe.
“Employers must be committed to safeguarding the safety and health of their workers, including the public, who are exposed to danger.
“Employers must ensure that the workplace is monitored daily,” he said yesterday.
Three highway construction workers were killed when one of the gantry crane components collapsed near Puncak Banyan, Persiaran Alam Damai, near Cheras yesterday morning.
Projek Lintasan Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) said the incident occurred at the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway construction site.
The crane launcher steel structure collapsed and landed on a Perodua Bezza car.
Mohan added that Niosh viewed the matter seriously, adding that the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 had outlined the responsibilities of the industry owner towards workers, contractors and the public.
“Niosh wishes to advise developers, main contractors and subcontractors to always ensure that construction work adheres to the law and safe standard operating procedures.
“Hazard Identification Risk Assessment and Risk Control, and Safety and Health Assessment System in Construction for each work activity can help reduce accidents.
“The authorities will conduct investigations to determine the cause of the accident, including several aspects, such as the crane operator, crane condition, weather conditions during operation and work procedures.”
