One-third of new virus cases recorded in Selangor

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded 1,268 new Covid-19 infections, with over one-third of all new cases reported in Selangor.

Of the 1,268 cases reported yesterday, only five were imported, while the rest (1,263 cases) were local transmissi­ons.

According to the Health Ministry, the total number of active Covid-19 cases stood at 14,637.

Selangor recorded the highest number with 490 new cases, followed by Sarawak (141), Johor (135) and Penang (99). Perlis was the only state that did not report any new case yesterday.

In the Klang Valley, Putrajaya reported six positive cases up to noon yesterday.

Another two deaths were reported yesterday, raising the country’s total number of Covid19 fatalities to 1,246.

A total of 161 patients were undergoing treatment at Intensive Care Units, including 73 patients who had been placed on respirator­y support. The ministry said 1,083 individual­s had been discharged yesterday, raising the country’s recovery tally to 320,925.

Four new Covid-19 clusters were reported up to noon yesterday, with two being workplace-linked clusters, one community cluster and another cluster involving high-risk groups.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the total number of active clusters stood at 395, including 56 clusters that logged new infections yesterday.

In Negri Sembilan, the Industri Permata Dua cluster was identified after a targeted screening exercise involving workers from three factories at Jalan Permata 2, Arab Malaysian Industrial Estate, Nilai, Seremban. The cluster had reported 51 positive cases.

In Johor, the Jalan Wawasan Dua cluster involved workers from a factory in Jalan Wawasan 2, Kawasan Perindustr­ian Sri Gading, Batu Pahat. The cluster had logged 24 positive cases to date.

In Selangor, the Jalan Alam cluster involved the staff of a medical centre in Jalan Sultan Alam Shah, Banting, Kuala Langat. The cluster had clocked 16 positive cases so far. The Chupak cluster involving the Serian and Samarahan districts in Sarawak had reported 57 infections to date.

Dr Noor Hisham said eight clusters ended yesterday, namely the Kubang Jambu, Jalan Geronggang, Bukit Tengah, Pangkal Changgong, Ladang Segama, Jalan Abdul Aziz constructi­on site, Jalan Dato Yunus and the Jalan Emas constructi­on site cluster.
