1,275 new cases, more than a third from Selangor

KUALA LUMPUR: The country logged 1,275 new Covid-19 infections up to noon yesterday, with Selangor recording the highest number of new cases.

Of the total, 1,243 cases were local transmissi­ons and 32 were imported.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 14,296 active cases.

More than a third of the new cases were reported in Selangor (478), with 389 cases, or more than 80 per cent, detected from active clusters and targeted testings.

Sarawak recorded 213 cases, followed by Penang (137) and Johor (120). Perlis and Putrajaya recorded two cases each, with three in Terengganu and five in Labuan.

With one death recorded yesterday, the total number of Covid19 fatalities increased to 1,249.

A total of 161 cases are being treated at Intensive Care Units, with 70 patients requiring breathing aid. A total of 1,509 patients had been discharged, raising the country’s number of recoveries to 323,925.

Dr Noor Hisham said 25 cases were related to Immigratio­n depot clusters in Jalan Duta (13), Tembok Pengkalan Chepa (five), Tembok Taiping (five), Tembok Bukit Besi (one) and Sepang 2 (one).

He said 13 new clusters had been identified in six states with 11 originatin­g from workplaces and two from communitie­s.

He said three were reported in Johor, two each in Selangor, Penang, Sabah, Kelantan and Sarawak following screenings.

The new clusters are Taman Brick, Jalan Gemilang Sukan and Jalan Sungai Chat in Johor; Sungai Emas and Jalan Atmosphere constructi­on sites in Selangor; Persiaran Cassia Selatan and Kampung Jawa Highway in Penang; Sawit Sebrang and Kolam Lintas in Sabah; Paya Bemban and Pengkalan Nangka in Kelantan; and Lorong Desa Senadin and Batu Gong in Sarawak. The community clusters are Batu Gong and Pengkalan Nangka.

The Jalan Atmosphere constructi­on site cluster recorded 22 cases, involving the Petaling district in Selangor, while Sungai Emas had 65 cases.

The Kampung Jawa Highway cluster, which saw 92 cases, involved Timur Laut, Barat Daya, Seberang Prai Tengah, Seberang Prai Utara and Seberang Prai Selatan districts in Penang.

As for Persiaran Cassia Selatan, 281 people were screened and 66 tested positive.

The Taman Brick, Jalan Gemilang Sukan and Jalan Sungai Chat workplace clusters tallied 90 cases to date; Paya Bemban and Pengkalan Nangka saw 50 cases while the Sawit Sebrang and Kolam Lintas clusters recorded 16 cases.

The Lorong Desa Senadin and Batu Gong clusters both recorded 80 cases.
