SARAWAK HAS MOST NEW CASES

State records 419 infections, followed by Selangor and Penang

THE country recorded 1,349 new Covid-19 cases and two deaths up to noon yesterday. This brings the nation’s tally to 350,959 cases with a death toll of 1,288.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, in a Facebook posting, said 1,342 cases involved local transmissi­ons while seven were those who contracted the virus abroad.

He said there were 1,270 recoveries and 14,509 active cases.

There were 186 patients being treated in the Intensive Care Unit and 94 required breathing assistance, he added.

Sarawak had the highest number of new infections with 419, a day after Perak emerged with the most cases with 494 on Saturday.

This was followed by Selangor with 343 cases and Penang with 185.

There were 95 new cases in Johor, 73 in Kuala Lumpur, 68 in Sabah, 32 in Kedah, 24 in Perak, 22 in Labuan, 20 in Negri Sembilan, 18 in Kelantan, 17 in Putrajaya, 15 in Melaka, 11 in Pahang, six in Terengganu and one in Perlis.

The ministry detected 10 new clusters with one involving Sarawak’s Tembok Sri Aman Detention centre, where 160 detainees tested positive.

Dr Noor Hisham said cases were reported in the cluster from March 30 following a mass targeted screening of detainees.

Until yesterday, he said 467 tests had been conducted on the detainees at the prison in Jalan Brayun, Sri Aman.

The cluster, he added, recorded the highest number of new infections yesterday, followed by the Jalan Jelawat cluster with 70 cases and Jalan Western cluster with 30 cases.

The nine other clusters involved five linked to workplace infections while four others were community transmissi­ons in Johor, Selangor, Kelantan, Putrajaya, Sarawak, Sabah and Perak.

The Jalan Maju Cemerlang cluster in Johor Baru had 11 cases that were reported following mass targeted screenings of factory workers on the premises in Jalan Maju 1, Taman Perindustr­ian Cemerlang in Ulu Tiram.

In Selangor, 19 from the Jalan Suasana workplace cluster in Hulu Langat tested positive.

The Jalan Alamanda cluster involves three business premises in the Putrajaya and Sepang districts where 12 cases had been reported.

In Kelantan, 17 tested positive in the Danan cluster, Pasir Puteh, since March 24.

In Sarawak, 17 cases were reported in the Sungai Mupong cluster involving Sibu and Meradong districts.

The cluster was linked to the community living in Sungai Mupong, Loba Stabar and Meradong.

In Sabah, the Rich Park cluster had recorded 17 cases involving attendees of a social event in Taman Rich Park in Tawau on March 26 and 27.

The cluster’s index, Case 345,810, was reported to be positive on April 1 and 55 people had been tested.

In Perak, 14 people have tested positive in the Kampung Batu Lapan Lekir cluster since March 30.

Dr Noor Hisham said there were 359 active clusters nationwide with 66 recording new cases.
