Tech, e-commerce among growth sectors
While the labour market continues to be impacted by movement restrictions, there are opportunities in some sectors that remained buoyant during these trying times, with some seeing higher demand during this period.
Aisling Consulting Sdn Bhd managing director Melissa Norman said the technology, e-commerce, manufacturing and healthcare were among sectors that saw growth.
“We have seen an increase in roles within these segments by at least 30 to 50 per cent from last year.
“The job market for roles in the technology and transformation sectors will continue to grow as companies pay more attention to laying the foundations for their digital operations, such as e-commerce, remote working, big data, and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions.”
She said the continued push for digitalisation over the next five years would create high demand for developers with specific language skillsets, AI specialists, data scientists and cybersecurity.
“Based on my conversations with organisations and businesses, they are determined to be more efficient in delivering their products and services, and be more responsive to customer demands in anticipation of increased competition.”
She said the healthcare sector would see continued growth.
This is especially so considering the Covid-19 pandemic and the World Health Organisation’s warning that this could be a precursor to more dangerous diseases.
Before the pandemic started last year, Malaysia already had a high demand for doctors, nurses and pharmacists, said Melissa.
“As the pandemic wears on, the strain on the healthcare sector is undeniable.
“Some countries might have seen health workers resigning because of the pandemic, but this does not seem to be the case in Malaysia.”
“This could be because of the way the public view the frontliners.
“Overseas healthcare workers may face social stigma because of the work that they do. In Malaysia, people continue to be supportive of them and pay tribute to our healthcare workers and responders.”
