SARAWAK TOPS LIST OF NEW CASES

State records 332 infections, followed by Selangor, Johor

MALAYSIA registered 1,139 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, with Sarawak having the highest number of new infections for the second day in a row at 332, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

This, he said, brought the cumulative cases to 354,468 with 14,097 active cases since the pandemic struck the country.

After Sarawak is Selangor with 294 cases and Johor (102).

“A total of 1,126 cases are local transmissi­ons involving 1,001 Malaysians and 125 foreigners.

“There are 13 imported cases involving seven Malaysians and six foreigners.”

Dr Noor Hisham said of the 332 cases in Sarawak, 276 cases were from clusters and close contact screenings.

He said there were four deaths, bringing the death toll to 1,304.

“The fatalities were recorded in Sarawak (two), followed by Kuala Lumpur and Johor with one death each. All were Malaysians, aged between 61 and 87, with preexistin­g medical conditions.

“There are 194 patients being treated in Intensive Care Units, with 86 requiring breathing assistance.

“A total of 1,199 recoveries were recorded, bringing the total number of Covid-19 recoveries to 339,067.”

Dr Noor Hisham also said 10 new clusters were detected yesterday in Selangor, Penang, Sarawak and Johor. To date, there are 1,431 active clusters nationwide.

He said six of the 10 clusters were workplace-related, while the rest were community clusters.

“The Jalan Simpang Balak cluster was detected in Hulu Langat, Selangor, after a group of workers from a logging company in Jalan Simpang Balak, Kampung Sungai Balak, Kajang, went for targeted screenings. From the 90 individual­s screened, 20 tested positive.

“The other workplace-related cluster is the Jalan Keretapi cluster, which was detected in Klang and Kuala Selangor after a group of factory workers from Jalan Keretapi Lama, Kampung Perepat, Kapar, went for targeted screenings.

“To date, of the 192 workers screened, 81 tested positive.”

Dr Noor Hisham said 10 clusters ended yesterday. They were the Jalan Loke Yew, Jalan Limau Manis, Jalan Cyber Satu, Vista Hilir, Batu Sebelas, Tembok Bender, Pona, Jalan Maju Satu, Tapak Bina Jalan MP and Kampung Sungai Burung clusters.
