CYCLISTS Azizulhasni Awang and Shah Firdaus Sahrom made heartfelt tributes to national head coach John Beasley on his 59th birthday on Tuesday.

Beasley, who has been coaching Malaysia since 2006, played a pivotal role in grooming riders such as Azizulhasni, Shah and the recently retired Fatehah Mustapa.

He is widely seen as a father figure to the national elite riders based in Melbourne.

Azizulhasni, 33, has a stellar career under the Aussie’s tutelage, winning a world keirin championship title (2017) and an Olympic bronze (2016)

The Dungun-born rider said he could not have asked for more from the coach. “Happy

birthday to the guy who always stands by my side regardless of whether I win or lose,” said Azizulhasni, 33, on social media.

“He has influenced me a lot throughout my career and life, and taught me to always be humble.

“He is a father figure to me and is also my kids’ ‘Aussie pop’ (grandpa).

“He is not only the best coach in the world but is also the most amazing human being I have ever known.”

Echoing Azizulhasni’s sentiments, Shah, 25, praised Beasley for his devotion and belief in his riders.

“He pulls me up when I am slack and improves me when I am lacking,” said Shah, who won the Australian keirin championship gold a fortnight ago.

“He pushes me beyond my limits, deep down inside I know that is the only way to cultivate a winning spirit.

“Thank you for believing in me from day one, even when I was down and out, and even when I had my own doubts (about myself ).

“He is more than a coach to me, he is a father (figure). Happy birthday John.”

Beasley, who will be at his fourth Olympics with the national team in Tokyo, said his birthday wish is to see Malaysian talent realise their true potential.

“I would love nothing better than to help Malaysians realise how good they can be,” said Beasley.
