KUALA LUMPUR: For five straight days, the number of new Covid-19 cases remained below the 1,500 mark, with 1,285 new infections recorded up to noon yesterday.

These cases pushed Malaysia’s cumulative infections to 355,753 cases.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 1,268 local transmissions involved 999 Malaysians and 269 foreigners, while the rest were imported cases.

He said there were 14,203 active cases.

Selangor took the lead with the highest number of new infections at 374 cases, followed by Sarawak (211), and Penang (162).

“There are 105 cases reported involving clusters in deportation and detention centres and prisons: Penjara Jalan Harapan (89), Tembok Sri Aman (six), Pagar Bukit Chagar (four), Tembok Taiping (two), Tembok Pengkalan Chepa (two), Tembok Mempaga (one) and Tembok Tapah (one).”

He said there were four deaths reported yesterday — two in Selangor and one each in Sabah and Sarawak — bringing the pandemic death toll to 1,308.

He said there were 186 Covid-19 patients being treated at intensive care units, with 81 requiring breathing support.

Dr Noor Hisham said the Health Ministry had detected four new clusters, with three linked to workplace infections in Selangor, Johor and Penang, and one community cluster emerged from a social event in Pekan and Kuantan, Pahang.

The three workplace clusters were the Jalan Taming, Industri Parit Raja and Perai Tiga clusters, and the community cluster was the Padang Manggis cluster.

Dr Noor Hisham said: “We have 348 active clusters, with 47 logging new cases.

“The cluster with the highest number of new cases (yesterday) is the Penjara Jalan Harapan cluster with 89 cases, followed by the Perusahaan Perai Tiga cluster (60 cases) and the Industri Parit Raja cluster (38 cases).”

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said three residential areas and two villages in Pahang had been placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) from today to April 22.

The affected areas were Taman Mentiga Jaya, Taman Perdana, Perkampungan Peramu Jaya 3, Taman Sepekan Makmur and Kampung Pulau Serai.

“We decided to implement EMCO to limit and control the residents’ movement as well as to prevent the spread of Covid-19 infections to the outside community.”

Meanwhile, 37 out of 1,306 foreign workers screened on Wednesday tested positive.

Ismail Sabri said out of the cumulative number of 677,690 foreign workers who had been screened, 10,199 of them tested positive.

He said the authorities had arrested 64 people for flouting the standard operating procedures on Wednesday, with 59 slapped with compounds and five remanded.

Thirty-two violations involved those who attempted to travel interstate without permission, 19 for not wearing face masks, 10 for not scanning the MySejahtera app upon entering premises, and three for not adhering to the physical distancing requirement.
