- REPORTS BY FABIAN PETER fabian.mark@nst.com.my

TAN Sri Norza Zakaria admitted there is still unfinished business for him at the BA of Malaysia (BAM) after he was re-elected as president for a second term. At the annual general meeting (AGM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday, Norza was unanimously supported by all 15 state BAs to helm the national body until 2025.

Speaking to the press, Norza, who is also president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), said: “It’s still unfinished business for me, and whatever I do in BAM, it also provides some form of benchmark for my job in OCM.

“As president of BAM, I have the opportunity to share my experience with other National Sports Associations in terms of governance, marketing, and high-performance aspects such as sports science. There are more positive benefits that I can share here at BAM. As OCM president, I deal with multi-sport events, and those Games are seasonal.”

Citing his milestones with BAM over the last four years, Norza believes he still has much to do in terms of building up the next generation of top shuttlers.

“I have the full support of the council. They want me to bring badminton to a level that we all want to achieve, for example, to see through Project 2024.

“Once the job is done, and I have found the proper successor, I will step down.”

Apart from landing major sponsors amid a global pandemic, Norza was instrumental in bringing over the national juniors to train under one roof at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) two years ago.

“To think about it, the junior programme that we implemented two years ago was futuristic and visionary.

“In a time when even the government was thinking about reopening school, we had insulated all of our players here (ABM) under one roof.

“The processes are already put in place, and we are now slowly seeing the results,” added Norza, who had initially planned to step down after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics that has since been moved to July this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Datuk V. Subramaniam and Datuk Seri Jahaberdeen Yunoos were elected as deputy presidents replacing Tan Sri Amar Abdul Aziz Husain and Datuk Lim Teong Kent.

Corporate figure, Datuk Michael Tang, was elected as treasurer while Datuk Kenny Goh will continue as secretary-general.
