KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia registered 1,739 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, with Selangor recording the highest number at 535.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Sarawak and Sabah recorded 443 and 127 new cases respectively up to noon.

“This brings the cumulative cases to 360,856 with 15,574 active cases.”

Dr Noor Hisham said 1,731 cases were local transmissions involving 1,343 Malaysians and 388 foreigners.

“There are also eight imported cases — three Malaysians and five foreigners — who arrived in the country today (yesterday).

“Of the 535 cases in Selangor, 441 cases are from clusters and close contact screenings.”

Fifty-six new cases are linked to prison clusters, which are the Telok Mas prison cluster (44), Tembok Tapah cluster (three) and Jalan Harapan Prison cluster (nine).

Dr Noor Hisham said there were eight fatalities yesterday, bringing the total to 1,329.

“The fatalities were recorded in Selangor (four), followed by Kuala Lumpur (two), and one each in Sabah and Johor.

“The deceased are locals aged between 57 and 78 who had medical conditions, except for one patient identified as a 57-year-old man who died at Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor.”

Dr Noor Hisham added that 183 patients were being treated at the Intensive Care Unit, with 81 on ventilators.

“The number of recoveries is 1,216, which brings the total number of recoveries to 343,953.”

On clusters, eight have been identified, and four are from Sarawak.

He said of the eight, five were workplace-related clusters. The rest were community-related clusters.

He said the five workplace clusters were Kasawari, Jalan Desaria, Jalan Bambangan, Jalan Badarudin and Jalan Zainab, while Nanga Kelangas, Abak Bon and Meruntum were community clusters.

The Jalan Zainab cluster in Kelantan involves Pasir Puteh, Bachok, Kota Baru, Pasir Mas and Tumpat.

“The index case for this cluster was reported positive on April 6. This cluster involves a company in Jalan Sultanah Zainab, Kota Baru where 51 out of 286 people screened were positive.”

The community-related cluster Nanga Kelangas in Julau, Sarawak, was detected on April 4.

“Thirty-seven out of 57 screened in this cluster tested positive.

“The last two community clusters, Abak Bon in Miri and Subis districts, Sarawak, and Meruntum in Putatan and Panampang, Sabah, are longhouse clusters and social gathering clusters, respectively.”

Dr Noor Hisham said Abak Bon recorded 34 new cases on Saturday and Meruntum recorded eight out of 72 who were tested.

He said 1,116 clusters had ended, including eight clusters: Melor, Jalan i-Park Tiga, Industri Waja, Bukit Putra, Kampung Sungai Maong, Jalan Kabel Gemilang, Jalan Sungai Baong, and Jalan Industri Tiga.
