- Zheng Guan

IT was a day of upsets as Ooi Kah Yan and Aifa Azman stormed into the women’s final of the SRAM PSA 1 Squash Championships.

World No 77 Kah Yan had a day to remember as she delivered one of her finest performances to score a 2-11, 11-9, 11-4, 2-11, 11-7 win over top seed Low Wee Wern in the semi-finals at the National Squash Centre, Bukit Jalil yesterday.

The win ranks as Kah Yan’s best career win, and she was understandably delighted with the outcome.

“It was tough because Wee Wern is so much more experienced, and it was really a fight for me,” said Kah Yan.

“But I just kept telling myself that I needed to hang in there and keep getting the next point.

“This is definitely my best win to date, and I’m really happy to be in the final after being out of competition for so long.”

The fourth seed plays third seed Aifa for the title.

World No 64 Aifa also scored an impressive upset as she rallied from a two-game deficit to down second seed Rachel Arnold 10-12, 7-11, 14-12, 11-8, 11-9 in the other semi-final.

“I felt that I was too slow in the opening two games, and I was giving Rachel a lot of opportunities to attack the ball,” said Aifa.

“In the third game, I told myself that I needed to win this as I really didn’t want to lose.

“I managed to get my rhythm in the fourth game, and I’m happy to be in the final since this is my first PSA 10 final.

“I know I have a chance to win my biggest career title, and I have to take my chances in the final.”

In the men’s event, top seed Ivan Yuen avoided an upset after slogging to overcome third seed Addeen Idrakie 12-10, 13-15, 9-11, 11-9, 11-5 in the semi-finals.

The 30-year-old meets second seed Syafiq Kamal for the title.

World No 79 Syafiq defeated veteran Elvinn Keo 11-7, 11-9, 11-4 in the other semi-final.
