Eain Yow reaches new milestone
Eain Yow pulled off an upset win to reach the second round of squash’s World Championships on Wednesday.
The world No 26 did it in style, stunning England’s world 19 Adrian Waller 11-6, 8-11, 11-9, 11-5 at the University Club of Chicago.
National No 1 Eain Yow got off to a flying start by taking the first game but the towering Waller won the next game.
But a calm Eain Yow took the big points in the crucial third game, and finished strongly to seal his win in 54 minutes.
It is a new milestone for Eain Yow, 23, who has never gotten past the first round of the World Championships in four previous attempts.
Eain Yow will meet World No 1 and 2018 winner Ali Farag of Egypt in the second round. Ali blew past homester Faraz Khan 11-3, 11-2, 11-7
“It’s a really good win for me. I was a little tense in the second game and gave it away, but I came back well in the third and I’m pleased to have closed it out in four.
“Ali will definitely be a very tough opponent, but I’ll be playing to win when I go up against him,” added Eain Yow.
However, Malaysian No 2 Ivan Yuen went down 9-11, 4-11, 4-11 in 32 minutes to world No 8 Diego Elias of Peru.
In women’s event, national No 2 S. Sivasangari clinched an 11-9, 11-2, 11-8 victory over Egypt’s Sana Ibrahim.
The World No 29 said: “I’m pleased to get this win because it’s always tough playing a younger Egyptian who is the underdog and hungry to win.”
Sivasangari, who will take on world No 14 Nele Gilis of Belgium in the second round, added: “I’m feeling more confident after getting this win. Nele is a very good and fit player, and I’ve played her only once many years ago. A lot has changed since then and I’m looking to give my best squash against her.”
