HERE WE GO AGAIN
EVEN as Covid-19 cases continue to climb with a record 138 deaths yesterday, it appears not to be a big enough deterrent for some Malaysians. Kelantan is concerned over the increase in visitors and vehicles with Hari Raya Aidiladha around the corner.
THERE has been an increase of motorists entering Kelantan since Friday despite warnings by the authorities not to travel during the Hari Raya Aidiladha period. State deputy police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Abdullah Mohamad Piah said motorists were entering the state via the Jeli district, which had led to an increase in traffic of between three and five per cent.
“Up to noon today (yesterday), police have recorded more out-of-state motorists entering Kelantan for Aidiladha.
“The motorists travelled from Perlis and Kedah and entered Kelantan through Jeli,” he said, adding that police had intensified traffic checks since Friday.
He said traffic flow in Gua Musang, Pasir Puteh and other districts remained normal.
Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah urged police to boost enforcement and ensure that only those with approved travel documents were allowed to enter Kelantan.
During a recent meeting with the state National Security Council, he said the state government had decided to impose more conditions on those wanting to enter Kelantan during Aidiladha.
“We agreed to make swab test compulsory for motorists entering the state and
that they must show negative test results,” he added.
Bernama reported that the concessionaire of the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK) and the East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1) ANIH Bhd expected a drop in traffic volume on both expressways during the festive period due to the ban on interstate travel.
Its executive director, Datuk Nik Fauzi Nik Hussein, said the company expected a drop of 81.3 per cent in KLK and 72.5 per cent for LPT1 compared with the daily average from Friday to July 25.
