Keeping prices low for durian lovers

- KOTA BARU

THE durian season is much awaited in Kelantan despite the movement controls under Phase Two of the National Recovery Plan. A trader here, realising that many people were facing financial difficulties, is selling the king of fruits for as low as RM15 per kilogramme.

“I am selling durians cheap because I want all durian lovers to be able to afford the fruit,” said Wan Mohd Faizal Wan Mohd Noor, 39, who operates the 9932 Durian Stall in Jalan Tok Kenali, Wakaf Stan, here.

The stall also offers durian kampung or durian asli, which is sold at RM20 to RM70 per bag, depending on the variety.

Wan Faizal said he gave customers an XL size plastic bag so that they could fill it with as many durian kampung as possible. The price is RM20 per bag for Grade BC durian, RM50 per bag for Grade A and RM70 per bag for the kahwin campur variety, he added.

Wan Faizal said his customers would queue up at his stall as early as 9am for the bulk sale, which is available everyday.

“In compliance with the Covid-19 prevention standard operating procedures, only four customers are allowed into the stall area at a time. They are given five minutes to fill their plastic bags.”

He said he sold 12 tonnes of durian a day, including Musang King, which he sells for RM25 per kilogramme.

“I get my supply of durians from smallholders in the state and from other states, including Perak and Johor.”

Customer Nik Izwandi Nik Ahmad, 29, said the bulk sale allowed him to eat his favourite fruit more often.

“I can get more than 10 Grade A durian kampung for only RM50.”
