‘Data shows dip in infections among elderly with NIP rollout’

-

KUALA LUMPUR: There are early signs of the Covid-19 National Immunisation Programme’s (NIP) effectiveness in reducing serious infections among senior citizens.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said based on Sungai Buloh Hospital’s latest data up to Sunday, Categories 4 and 5 cases among senior citizens had seen a decline since the 23rd epidemiology week.

“The downtrend is in line with the rollout of Phase 2 of the NIP in early April and early signs are seen in the 22nd epidemiology week.

“The (Health) Ministry has announced that starting July 17, all senior citizens aged 60 and above who have yet to receive their (vaccination) appointment dates can walk in to any vaccination centres (PPV) in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor to get vaccinated on the same day,” he said yesterday.

He said PPVs would stay open on weekends and public holidays. “This is in line with the ministry’s commitment to achieve herd immunity as soon as possible. The rakyat are advised to go for their appointment on the given date and venue, as well as fully comply with the standard operating procedures throughout the vaccination process.”
