Sean returns to KL, hopes to become a Harimau

- Farah

footballer Sean Gianelli hopes to earn his Harimau Malaya stripes this year when he returns to KL City.

The last time the 27-year-old played for the City Boys was 2020-2021 before joining UiTM FC (2021) on loan and joining Sri Pahang for a season last year.

Sean said every footballer dreams of representing their country and he is no different.

And following a change in the M-League format, he is optimistic of a turning point in his career this season.

The 2023 season will see the M-League ending in December instead of November with six trophies at stake.

“I want to play as much as possible. We (KL City) did well in the 2022 AFC Cup and the 2021 Malaysia Cup. I want to help the team as much as I can, score and assist too.

“It’s going to be a long season, very tough but I think it’s good because more players will be used (gain more playing minutes).

“I want to see KL reach the top four but for me personally, I would like to get as many playing minutes as I can. Because with that you can get goals, assists... all these just come hand-in-hand.

“Playing minutes are also important for a player to get selected for the national team.”

The former Johor Darul Ta’zim II player also hopes to emerge as the local top goalscorer. Last year, the honours went to PJ City striker Darren Lok with 10 goals. The last time a local player won the Golden Boot award was 12 years ago when Terengganu’s Abdul Hadi Yahya scored 20 goals in the 2011 season.

Last season Sean made 12 appearances for Pahang, scoring a goal and making one assist.
