LICENCE suspension awaits 14 express bus drivers after they failed drug screening tests conducted by the Road Transport Department (RTD) at terminals nationwide in the Special Operation (Op Khas) between Feb 1 and Feb 21.

The drivers, who were detained at various bus terminals in the country, tested positive for drugs and were prevented from getting behind the wheel. They were replaced by other drivers to ferry passengers to their respective destinations.

RTD senior enforcement director Datuk Lokman Jamaan said Op Khas, with assistance from the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), was conducted before the drivers began their journey at the bus terminals.

“The 14 drivers tested positive for syabu, methamphetamine and tetrahydrocannabinol.

“RTD will call the bus operators to complete the investigations before they are handed to the Land Public Transport Agency for further action.

“After obtaining further confirmation from AADK, the drivers involved will have their licences suspended. Investigations revealed those detained are express bus drivers on long-haul trips.

“RTD and AADK officers are stationed at bus terminals across the country to conduct drug test on all the drivers before they begin their trip. RTD personnel will also emphasise the safety aspects of the vehicles and ensure the safety standards for roadworthiness,” he said in Gambang here yesterday.

In another matter, Lokman said RTD, to date, had inspected 21,705 public transport vehicles during the operation and issued 1,181 summonses for various offences.

He said out of the 1,181 summonses issued, 266 were for technical offences, 126 for no vocational licence, 99 for expired motor vehicle licence, 91 for driving without a competent driving licence, 61 for not having insurance and 460 for committing other offences.

“A total of 78 summonses were issued for six major traffic offences, namely cutting queue, overtaking at double lines, failing to comply with traffic lights, driving on emergency lanes, using mobile phones while driving, and continuously using the right lane. Thirty-two vehicles were seized.

“RTD will not compromise with bus operators, owners or drivers who violate the laws and regulations. Enforcement and strict action will be continuously carried out to prioritise road safety,” he said, adding that the special operation for Chinese New Year and school holidays would end on Feb 29.
