Patient’s claims of heavy bleeding after procedure to be probed

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry will investigate an incident at Cyberjaya Hospital, where a patient reported “heavy bleeding” following a urinary catheter removal procedure.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, in a reply on Friday night, said: “The ministry will investigate this to address any allegation of negligence, ensuring that these claims from the patient’s side are properly handled.”

Earlier, a patient reported bleeding after a urinary catheter removal procedure at the hospital.

In a Facebook post, Zaslan Zeeha Zainee shared a photo of his adult diaper soaked in blood.

He claimed that the urinary catheter was removed forcefully, causing him to bleed and be in pain.

Cyberjaya Hospital director Dr Shahabuddin Ibrahim, in a statement, said the patient was admitted on March 27 for dengue fever.

“The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for monitoring and had a urinary catheter inserted to monitor hydration levels closely.”

He said the patient’s condition had stabilised, and was moved to the normal ward on March 28 and underwent the urinary catheter removal procedure.

“During the removal procedure, the staff in charge encountered difficulty and called for a medical officer to perform the procedure.

“The medical officer removed the catheter without any bleeding.

“However, an hour after its removal, the patient reported bleeding.”

Subsequently, a doctor from the surgery department was called to evaluate the situation and concluded that no specific intervention was necessary, directing continuous monitoring instead. “The patient remained stable, with blood tests showing no signs of blood loss and stable platelet levels.”

Dr Shahabuddin said: “Current urine output also indicated no further bleeding.”

A team comprising doctors and nurses met the patient and family to provide an explanation and apologies.

The patient will continue to be monitored and was expected to be discharged over the weekend.

The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to improving healthcare delivery to the public, welcoming suggestions for improvement.
