I think one of the realisations most people in the world have now come to realise is how “interconnected” we really are. Simply, what I do impacts you and what you do impacts me as well. We cannot run away from this truth any longer.
There are a whole plethora of implications from this. The whole idea of business as usual and the current economic growth models of nations has been re-thought. But focusing on the issue of sustainability, and ethical fashion, it has become clear that we can no longer ignore how and who makes the things we buy – what materials make up the product (materials), who makes it (people), how is it made (the process) and what happens to the product at the end of its useful life (circular waste). We need to think about the impacts on humans and the natural environment. So my advice to consumers is this: Ask who made what you are buying, read labels to check for materials (try to buy natural fabrics), composition and where it is made. Even this can be a start to a more sustainable future. When you start asking questions, you start wondering and realise the gravity and impact of your consumption decisions. Buy less, buy well.
