Tatler Dining Malaysia

Shanghai

-

Arecent facelift has given this Chinese restaurant of two decades goldhued décor, tables in their own nooks for more privacy, and a separate bar area. Art-deco meets the Orient in framed artwork of flora and fauna. Fans of Shanghainese steamed dumplings won’t be disappointed by the xiao long bao; each skilfully folded dumpling containing soup and minced pork literally explodes with flavour. Other classics include the sweet and sour pork, an instant hit whether served with fluffy white rice or as a side snack, and the lobster noodles, which underscores the kitchen’s finesse with handmade noodles. For something less conventional, order the deep-fried foie gras blanketed in slices of cod. Both chilled and warm desserts are available—get one of each to share. Adults can savour the rice wine with mandarin and rice dumplings while kids enjoy the mango sago.

TATLER TIP

The first sight upon entry to the restaurant is a well-stocked bar displaying all sorts of liquors and spirits — the Chinese do love their spirits, after all. There is also a separate bar menu consisting of a broad range of classic alcoholic liquors and Chinese wines.
