Trying to locate Beta KL feels like a game of hide-and-seek. Here’s a tip: Look for a door in the wall covered with faux ivy and you’ll find the stylish establishment. Sister restaurant to Skillet At 163, Beta KL takes a more Asian approach towards contemporary cooking. While the lunch menu sees à la carte offerings, diners must partake of one of two degustations after dusk. A Taste of Beta provides an enjoyable taster of the eatery’s capabilities, but A Tour of Malaysia lets you get to the heart of what the modern Malaysian restaurant stand for. Chef Raymond Tham, an alumnus of KDU University College who also returned to his alma mater to teach, excels at plating and presentation, especially with regards to small bites. Take the Inverted Karipap for instance; curried potatoes are cradled in a curved piece of deep-fried pastry, making for a fun one-bite snack. Given that Chef Tham graduated in the pastry arts, it’s no surprise that the desserts also shine. Beta KL’S contemporaries could learn a thing or two from the restaurant’s attentive service—one of the best in KL, from our experience.
