CM reminds journalists to use skills wisely

KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said journalists had a constructive role to play and reminded them to use their skills and influence wisely for the betterment of society.

He said the process of transformation in the country was on-going and challenging but was needed so that the nation would be able to compete with the region and the world.

“This is where the media play a vital role. Your reports on how these developments are taking off and the change they bring are factors towards stirring investors’ confidence, and more importantly ensure the public their best interests are in good hands.

“Journalists have a constructive role to play in society. You not only report the news and provide information to the public but also act as an important intermediary between the government and the people,” said Musa at the annual Kinabalu Press Awards held here yesterday.

“The media can influence people’s way of thinking, move them into action and even change the social and political landscape of a nation.

“This tool should be used wisely and for the betterment of society. Using it in a different direction and in an irresponsible manner could spell disaster,” he cautioned.

Musa also said the public relied on the media for true and accurate reporting, and their reports should be based on solid facts and not pure speculations as this would paint the wrong picture and cause unnecessary concern, or even panic.

“At a time when information, albeit true or false, is available at the press of a finger, the media now have more responsibility to ensure their reports are accurate.

“The media should not allow any leeway for stories based on mere allegations, made up of lopsided information or half-truths.

“I am happy to see that the media in Sabah have been responsible and positive in sharing significant and important news with the public, and this includes profiling the development agenda and highlighting people’s needs or grouses,” he added.

The Chief Minister also commended Shell Malaysia for its support and leading role as the strategic partner in this tripartite programme.

“The Kinabalu Shell Press Awards is truly a great platform for all members to work together and grow. Through the programme, the media fraternity has the opportunity to develop its capabilities while the state government gets to work with a key stakeholder in the quest for economic development for Sabah.

“Shell’s contribution to society is not limited to this programme and your capacity building programmes via human resource development. Shell is giving back to the larger community through many of your CSR programmes that focus on, among others, safety, education and the environment. We thank you for your contribution towards Sabah both in enhancing our business and economic sectors and through community building initiatives,” Musa said.

He also thanked the Malaysian Press Institute and judges for taking up the tough job of evaluating the work submitted.
