Homemade gun seized, rifle found at forest reserve
KENINGAU: The police have arrested a local man and seized a homemade gun, also known as bakakuk, in his possession in a village in Tambunan, at 4.10 pm on November 9.
Speaking at a press conference at the police headquarters here on Thursday, district police chief Deputy Superintendent Douglas Nyeging Taong said a 39-yearold suspect had been remanded and was being investigated under Section 8 (a) of the Firearms Act 1960.
He said the complainant, a 34-year-old police officer, together with members of the police headquarters Criminal Investigations Department here, had gone to an unnumbered house in the village and inspected the house, witnessed by the suspect.
“During inspection, the police found a home-made gun placed beside the main door of the house with two rounds of ammunition.
“During the inspection, the suspect admitted that the gun and two bullets, were owned by him,” he said.
Douglas said the complainant, together with his team, subsequently arrested the suspect and seized the homemade shotgun and two rounds of ammunition, for further action.
Meanwhile, the police are also investigating the discovery of an air rifle, ammunition and fishing equipment at the roadside to the Ulu Sungai Milian forest reserve in Sook, on November 6.
He said a 41-year-old man who also worked as an enforcer for a company here, had lodged a police report the same day at 3.20 pm.
According to him, the complainant while assisting the Wildlife Department in a roadblock assignment, saw a motorcycle ridden by a man and a pillion rider trying to get through the blockade.
“When they knew that there was a roadblock to the forest reserve, the motorcyclist then turned around and threw something into the bushes beside the road.
“The complainant went to the bush to inspect and discovered an air rifle, four green shotgun bullets, three rolls of short net and fishing equipment,” he said.
Douglas said the investigation was still ongoing to identify the suspect who had dumped such exhibits.
The case is being investigated under Section 8 (a) of the Firearms Act 1960 and upon conviction, be liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding seven years or to a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or both.
