UMS will open library to journalists

-

KOTA KINABALU: Media practitioners in the state may soon be able to obtain resources in Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s (UMS) physical and virtual library.

UMS deputy vice chancellor (Research and Innovation) Professor Dr Shahril Yusof said the university had so far opened its library to government agencies such as the Sabah State Health Department.

“We have spent a lot on the library with additional books and so on, only the students have benefited from it. We are not going to lose anything if we open it to other members,” said Shahril at UMS’ inaugural beachside Media Carnival with the children of Rumah Anak Kesayangan Sembulan at the university’s Outdoor Development Centre here yesterday.

“The library is going to extend to other agencies, but on the way here just now, I thought why don’t we open the membership to the media because you also need to do your homework on certain topics. If you have access to the books, to the journals, we have eBooks, eJournals, that would be good,” he explained.

The deputy vice chancellor said details of the membership will be discussed at a meeting this month.

Once reaching a finalization, Sabah’s media practitioners will most probably be given a library membership card that will allow access to UMS’ resources, including the university’s published journals, by March this year.
