Filipinos contribute a lot to Malaysia
KOTA KINABALU: Filipinos have to be strong, united, do good things and realize that they are important people assisting Malaysia in many ways.
Kota Kinabalu Filipino Community president Marilou S. Chin said Filipinos have contributed a lot to the construction, plantation, fishery, domestic and services sectors.
“We are proud of ourselves,” she said at the Filipino Community Integration Day organized by the Federation of Filipino Associations in Malaysia, Sabah Chapter, at Wisma Wanita here yesterday.
Marilou, who is also the organizing chairperson, stressed that Filipinos have to recognize themselves as law-abiding people and a part of the society.
On another note, Marilou said there were many Filipino children born in Sabah, some were the fifth generation here, but could not get access to formal schools.
As such, she said voluntary projects such as The Stairway to Hope in Kota Kinabalu and Stairway to Success in Sandakan provided alternative educations to Filipino children in Sabah who could not enter formal schools.
On the event itself, Marilou said the purpose of the activity was to connect and promote friendship, unity and fun among Filipinos, as well as to inform Filipinos of the existing services they could reach out to while they were staying, working and residing in Sabah.
Apart from presentation by the exhibitors, there were dance performances, bingo games, singing competition and highlight of the day, Mr and Ms Valentines talent contest.
Also present at the event were Vice Consul of the Philippine Embassy in Malaysia, Alvin Malasig and Marivic Mondina from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in Kuala Lumpur.
