Tawau records increase in crime index

-

TAWAU: The district police will have a major focus on the increase of the crime index and drug cases today while they target to settle more than 30 per cent of criminal charges and 20 per cent for the Key Performance Indicator (KPI).

District police chief ACP Fadil Bin Hj Marsus said a total of 141 cases were reported from January 1 to February 14, compared 88 cases in the same period last year, showing an increase of 60 per cent in the number of cases.

In respect of the crime index in Tawau, Fadil said property crime is a major contributor to the increase of the crime index this year, which includes car theft and burglary. It was also undeniable that drug activities had also affected the increase in property crimes.

Therefore, he said the Tawau police will prioritise ‘Aggressive Operation’ as their main strategy to curb the increase in the crime index and drug cases, as well as optimise all the resources given through the coordination of the annual police programme. The ‘espirit de corps’ will also be a priority for them to achieve success.

Fadil was speaking at the first monthly police assembly at the Tawau police station here yesterday morning. Nineteen police officers and personnel also received awards in the assembly.

In his speech, he said the police are still striving to achieve the three main priorities of the Inspector-General of Police, which are to maintain public order and public welfare; to control and curb crime through prevention and effective investigation; and to strengthen integrity and standards of compliance among citizens.

Thus, Fadil urged policemen at all levels, including supporting teams, to continue their efforts to ensure their responsibilities can be implemented effectively.

He also hoped that they could generate an excellent working culture by cultivating moral values in order to produce a viable workforce that is competitive and disciplined.

After the assembly, Fadil also witnessed the handover of duties ceremony between the district police management division chief ASP Thangarajoo A/L Velayudan (outgoing) and ASP Mohd Raha Bin Ab Rauf (incoming).

ASP Thangarajoo served in the Tawau police for 12 years and six months plus 15 days and he will be transferred to the Port Dickson police station to work for the two years and 11 months until his retirement.
