Man charged over sword

KOTA KINABALU: A man was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday with possession of a sword.

Charles Untum, 23, pleaded not guilty before magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie, to a charge under Section 6 (1) of the Corrosive, Explosive and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958 which carries a maximum jail of up to two years and whipping upon conviction.

The accused was caught having the weapon at the roadside in front of a restaurant at Indah Permai in Sepanggar, Menggatal on November 11, 2015.

The court set March 3 for case management and the accused was granted RM3,000 bail with two local sureties, pending disposal of the case.

In an unrelated case, 52-year-old Kong Yun Phin was fined a total of RM5,500 by the same court for two charges of possessing and consuming syabu.

On the first count, the accused, who was represente­d by counsel Luke Ressa Balang, was fined RM3,500, in default, six months’ jail for having 1.50 grams of syabu at a roadside in Lok Kawi on October 19, 2015.

Charles pleaded guilty under Section 12 (3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952 which carries a maximum fine of RM100,000 or a jail term of up to five years, upon conviction.

The self-employed received another RM2,000 fine, in default, five months’ imprisonme­nt after he admitted to his second count of consuming syabu at the Penampang police station on the same day.

The offence was framed under Section 15 (1) (a) of the DDA 1952 which is punishable by a maximum fine of RM5,000 or a jail term of up to two years, upon conviction.
