Fire drill at Tawau Hospital

TAWAU: Eleven ‘victims’, including five women, suffered varying degrees of injuries in a fire drill held at Ward 8 of the Tawau General Hospital yesterday morning.

The hospital medical officer, Dr. Siti Fatimah Paturusi, said all supposed victims were adults, aged between 20 and 40 year-old, six of whom were categorize­d as critical, two semi-critical and another three non-critical.

She disclosed this to the media during a press conference after a fire drill exercise at the hospital here where the Tawau police, the district fire and rescue department, Tawau Civil Defence Force and Malaysian Red Crescent of Tawau Chapter took part.

Siti said it is their annual programme to create awareness and make preparatio­ns in case a fire incident were to happen. She also thanked the involved agencies for their good response in this fire drill exercise.

During the drill, the fire and rescue department received an alert and despatched two paramedic engines, a lorry and two utilities vehicle with 30 firemen, including two officers, to the supposed scene of the fire, which was then put under control.

A police officer and six police personnel also rushed to the supposed scene after being alerted, while five members of the Tawau Civil Defence Force also responded to the alert of a suppose fire.

The Malaysian Red Crescent, Tawau Chapter despatched 12 members to the supposed scene to assist in the accident and emergency (A&E) section at the Green Zone.
