Passport-less crossborder drive proposed

LIMBANG: A system for passport-less road travel across the borders of Sarawak, Brunei and Sabah has been proposed.

Limbang Member of Parliament Hasbi Habibollah called on the government to consider implementing the system, which is already used in Europe after initial requirements have been complied with.

“I am optimistic that the government will consider such a seamless drive concept road network to facilitate the mobility of the people of Sarawak, Sabah and neighbouring Brunei,” he said during a dialogue with village chiefs, community leaders and the Immigration Department here on Wednesday.

However, he said the system must take into account the sovereignty, laws and security of both countries.

Hasbi said he looked forward to having travellers from Limbang go to Miri or Kuching without using a passport.

“However, those from Sarawak or Sabah stopping in Brunei must undergo immigration clearance and vice versa for those from Brunei to the respective states,” he said.

On the proposal for the Pendam Immigration Post, he said it is vital to fulfil the needs of Malaysians in Limbang and Brunei.

“The government will consider this demand in tandem with the construction of the second Limbang bridge, where works are expected to start next year,” he said.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Adenan Satem performed the ground breaking ceremony for the RM130 million bridge project earlier this year.
