KOTA KINABALU: Employers in Sabah have been given six months to register illegal Indonesian and Filipino workers for the rehiring programme.

Sabah Immigration assistant director, who is also the department’s head of foreign workers unit, Asani Ladjani said employers must first comply with the conditions set.

“One of the requirements is the immigrant must be free from any criminal record or suspect list.

“They are also required to pass a medical check with Growarisan, and must not be holders of any student or visit pass or any long term passes,” he said, during a briefing on the rehiring programme at the Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) here yesterday.

Asani said that immigrants must be between the ages of 18 to 54 at the date of the rehiring programme registration.

Those who lost their old passport, he added, are required to present their new passport together with a copy of their temporary working visit pass that expired between 2012 and December 31, 2016.

In the meantime, he said the State government had also appointed Syarikat Inti Padu Technology to implement the registration, which costs RM1,200 per worker.

Apart from that, employers are also required to pay RM500 for every worker and compound the workers a sum of RM300, plus RM100 for the worker’s special pass.

A JP Visa charge is also imposed for foreign workers who overstay on documents that expired on or before December 31, 2016.

The programme was launched on February 15 and will end in August.

Also present at the briefing was KKCCCI president, Datuk Michael Lui.
