Fugitive who rammed cop with car at roadblock nabbed

JOHOR BAHRU: In a bid to flee a police road-block mounted near the Plentong Industrial Park here on Sunday, a fugitive rammed his car into one of four policemen.

As the police corporal lay on the ground, nursing his left leg which was broken in three parts, and injured hip, a police multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) was despatched to intercept the getaway Proton Wira and bring the criminal to book.

In a chase that ensued about 2.30pm, the two vehicles were involved in a collision near a bank in Jalan Rosmerah 2/11, Taman Johor Jaya.

Seri Alam police chief Supt Jokhiri Abd Aziz said at that juncture, the fugitive who was armed with an iron rod emerged from the car to attack the policemen who shot him in the waist in self-defence and arrested him.

He said the 30-year-old suspect was wanted in 10 criminal cases, including car-jacking and drug-related offences, adding that the car was reported stolen in Skudai recently.

“The man will be investigat­ed for attempted murder in relation to ramming into the 33-year-old police corporal who is attached to the Johor Bahru (south) police headquarte­rs.

“The injured policeman has been warded at the Sultan Ismail Hospital in a stable condition,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Jokhiri said, earlier, two policemen on patrol spotted the suspect in a car in Jalan Perak near Pasir Gudang here and ordered him to stop.

However, the man sprayed diesel at the police MPV, using a rubber hose connected to two drums attached to the car and sped away, he added.

“While driving towards Taman Johor Jaya, the suspect rammed into the police corporal before he was nabbed,” said Jokhiri.
