PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) yesterday pledged a commitment to ensure the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games 2017 (KL 2017) are organised as green games.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said in efforts to reduce solid waste at waste disposal centres (land fill), food and drinks for all athletes, officials, staff and volunteers would be served using degradable packing courtesy of SCGM Berhad, a company producing food packing products.

Khairy said SCGM Berhad, a company producing food packaging products would sponsor food packing products under the brand name, Benxon, for the KL 2017.

Apart from sponsoring food packaging products, the company would also make a cash contribution for the Games and involve in creating awareness through a 4R concept (reduce, reuse, recycle and return to mother nature).

“SCGM Berhad will be known as an official green games partner for KL 2017.

SCGM is a local company from Kulai, Johor and the first company to become a sponsor for the Games, outside the Klang valley.

“I hope this will open the door for more sponsors from outside the Klang valley to come forward and be a part of the Games. We are also involved in various green games programmes like setting up containers for recyclable products and volunteers specifically to ensure a green games,” he told reporters after signing the sponsorship deal at the Youth and Sports Ministry, here yesterday.

Khairy said the RM80 million targeted for hosting KL 2017 would be achieved soon since pledges for 85 percent or RM68 million has been fulfilled.

The 29th SEA Games is scheduled from Aug 19-31 while ASEAN Para Games takes place from Sept 17-23. - Bernama
