Sabah returned with an impressive haul of eight gold medals in the Na onal Weightli ing Championship Terengganu at the Gong Badak Indoor Stadium yesterday.
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah returned with an impressive haul of eight gold medals in the National Weightlifting Championship Terengganu at theGong Badak Indoor Stadium yesterday.
The state squad also added four silvers and five bronzes to their overall tally.
After opening with five gold, three silver and two bronze medals on Saturday, Sabah added two golds on Sunday before ending with one gold, one silver and three bronzes yesterday.
Nelcy Tunik, who is in the Youth Olympic Games 2018 Project squad, bagged gold for Snatch and Clean & Jerk in the women’s under-17 44kg division.
Kelantan-based Sabah National Regional athlete (back-up athlete) Fendylina Adim then won the Snatch gold in the women’s under17 48kg category while winning a bronze in the Clean & Jerk.
Another regional trainee Rony Jesos, won one gold and a silver in the men’s open 56kg, which was dominated by Sabah athletes.
Rony, who is based at Bukit Jalil, won the Snatch gold but missed out on a second top podium finish to Sabah’s backup athlete and winner Calixtus Daunis in the Clean & Jerk.
Calixtus won a silver in the Snatch event.
The other medallist from the first day were Mixccomoko Philip who won silver and bronze in the men’s under-17 56kg division.
Sabah returned to the arena on Sunday with Elly the main highlight by winning two golds for Snatch and Clean & Jerk in the women’s open.
The momentum continued into the last day where Maceeta Maryln Marcus took gold in the women’s 63kg and followed by St Xavier Henry (one silver and one bronze) in men’s 65kg as well as Sheren Lueh (two bronzes) in the women’s 58kg.
Sabah Weightlifting Association president Philip Gisan was happy with the performance of the state athletes.
“We are very happy with the results. But, we would like to win more gold in the next tournament,” he texted yesterday.
