Stolen speakers land fisherman in jail

KOTA KINABALU: A fisherman was sentenced to 24 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for retaining two stolen speakers.

Rahman Juan, 22 who was brought before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 411 of the Penal Code.

The indictment provides for a jail term of up to five years or a fine or both, upon conviction.

He was caught retaining the stolen speakers at an unnumbered house at Kampung Wak Wak along Jalan Sepanggar, Manggatal at 6pm on March 15.

Prosecutin­g officer Inspector Suzie @Stephanie Kupit told the court that a complainan­t, a teacher at Sekolah Agama Negeri Kampung Gentisan Manggatal, had lodged a police report on March 13.

In the report, two units of speakers inside a teacher’s room at the school had gone missing and believed to be stolen.

On March 15, the police found and caught the accused for retaining the stolen items at a house at Kampung Wak Wak, Manggatal.

In another court, a 56-year-old man was sentenced to 17 months’ jail for committing a similar offence.

Law Hui Choong pleaded guilty before Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus to a charge under Section 411 of the Penal Code.

He had retained a stolen car which belonged to another man at a restaurant in Lawas, Sarawak on January 7.

In mitigation, Law, who was unrepresen­ted, prayed for a lenient sentence while prosecutin­g officer Inspector James Paran requested for a deterrent sentence to be imposed against Law.

The court also ordered Law to serve his jail sentence starting from his date of arrest.

Meanwhile in a separate case, the court set April 24 for case management of a 31-year-old man, who was charged with retaining stolen computer items.

Cindy fixed the date on Bidin Ajah, after he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was accused of retaining a computer, a keyboard, a mouse and a monitor which belonged to a 45-year-old woman at a house at Kampung Gentisan Manggatal at 7.15pm on March 15.

The court released the unrepresen­ted Bidin on bail of RM5,000 with two local sureties pending disposal of the case.
