PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) disburses zakat (tithe) collection to about 22,000 asnaf (needy people) in Kuala Lumpur each month, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.

He said the council also made “one off” tithe payments to selected recipients under 28 schemes like for education, scholarships and school uniform.

“This is made possible through zakat collection from individuals and companies. The collection is then disbursed to those in need,” he said at a ceremony where Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) handed over business zakat to MAIWP Kuala Lumpur yesterday. PNB made the zakat payment for the financial years 2013 to 2016 totalling RM17.2 million. The cheque was presented by PNB president and group chief executive Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar to Jamil Khir who received it on behalf of MAIWP.

In KUALA LUMPUR, MAIWP Zakat Collection Centre (PPZMAIWP) Chief Executive Officer’s Office assistant general manager Nor Mukshar Harun in a statement said 11 counters would be open during the duration of the Ramadan month including weekends and public holidays to facilitate Muslims to do their zakat obligations. The zakat fitrah for the federal territories has been fixed at RM7.
