Accident rate drops in Sandakan

-

SANDAKAN: District police chief ACP Mohd Azhar Hamim said Sandakan recorded a drop in accident rate from 998 during the first six months of 2016 to 941 cases this year.

Quoting a statistics record, Mohd Azhar attributed the drop in accident rate to ‘Ops Selamat' which was launched from January 1 to June 31 this year.

Mohd Azhar was speaking to reporters after launching “Ops Selamat” in front of Shell Gas Station, Mile 8, yesterday.

He said with the launching of ‘Ops Selamat' from June 19 to July 2 in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, the accident rate would continue to decline.

“The ‘Ops Selamat' was launched mainly to reduce road accident and to curb other crimes such as house breaking and theft.

“As for vehicle owners who intend to go their respective villages or other destinations during this Hari Raya holiday, I would like to urge them to inspect their vehicle to make sure they are roadworthy so that they can drive home safely,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Azhar said those who would be leaving their houses for a long period, they ensure that their houses were locked.

“Those who will be leaving their houses for long period can inform the police so that they can frequently monitor their houses or residential areas by filling a form at the police station,” he added.

The launch was also attended by other officers from government agencies such as Road Transport Department, Fire and Rescue Department and Hospital Duchess of Kent.
