CP: Police to tighten security along East Coast during Raya
KOTA KINABALU: Police will continue to tighten security along the East Coast during Hari Raya in the wake of the continuing conflict in Marawi in the Philippines.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din said the police were ready for any eventuality and were taking the situation in the neighboring country (Philippines) seriously.
Ramli also said that he did not rule out the possibility of some militants may try to slip into the country via the East Coast following the conflict with the Philippines security forces.
“Yes, we are seriously monitoring the situation in Marawi and are ready for any eventuality. We also believe that some of the militants may take the opportunity to enter Sabah, so we are beefing up our security forces and tightening security along our waters,” he said during Ops Selamat 11/2017 and the breaking of fast event with 150 police officers and personnel from the Kota Kinabalu police contingent (IPD KK) at Taman Awam Teluk Likas here yesterday.
Also in attendance were Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Razaruddin Husain and city police chief, Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra. Elaborating further, Ramli said Ops Selamat 11/2017 is focused on road safety and ‘balik kampung’ campaign.
“Police personnel will be deployed along accident-prone areas throughout the state to ensure that road users abide by the traffic rules so they and their love ones can arrive safely at their destination.
“For the ‘balik kampung’ campaign, we urge those who are leaving their homes to inform the police so that patrols can be conducted around their residential areas to avert break-ins,” he said, adding that response to the ‘balik kampung’ campaign has been well received by the public over the past several years.
