PWD to provide solution to landslide-prone road
TAMBUNAN: Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan agreed with the Public Works Department's (PWD) concept of permanent construction and repairs as the long-term solution to the landslide problems plaguing the Kampung Tampasak Liwan Road here.
He said the concept introduced by PWD could prevent hills from collapsing.
“I believe this concept can solve the problems faced by the villagers,” he said after a briefing by PWD district engineer Vitus Agidius Panyah and a visit to the road here on Tuesday.
Pairin said his visit to the road was in response to the appeal by the residents of Tampasak Liwan as the road connecting their village to the main road, farms and houses, was inaccessible.
He said the problem also prevented the residents from doing their trading activities.
Pairin said the road was important for the residents as well as the schoolchildren in this village.
Pairin, who is also Infrastructure Development Minister, said the weather now was contributing to the deterioration of many places and this was one of the places.
He also urged PWD to prepare the necessary action on the road as well as to conduct checks on the other areas.
Earlier, PWD district engineer Vitus Agidius Panyah said the location of the landslide was at Km 1.32, Tampasak Liwan Road.
He said the road was initially built by a logging company in the 1980s without following PWD specifications. This road was then handed over to PWD Tambunan in 1995.
An allocation of RM8.5 million was required for the permanent construction and repair of the road, he said.
