Continuing the tradition of illuminating Jalan Pa Dris

-

SIBU: Three days before Hari Raya Aidilfitri every year, the side lane of Jalan Pa Dris Road, off Jalan Kampung Hilir, will be illuminated by a sea of oil lamps.

Each year, villagers will work to build a special structure adorned with oil lamps along the narrow 50-metre lane.

Two years ago it was a Jalur Gemilang, while last year 400 oil lamps decorated an archway.

“This year, we are coming up with four entrance arches supported by eight bamboo poles and the design depicts our warm hospitality, which will be accorded to all our visitors during the celebration,” said businessman Mat Jahan.

Mat, 44, said the idea to decorate the lane was mooted several years back and since then, he has never missed doing his part.

“Our community is closelyknitted and working together to come up with these structures will bring us closer,” he said.

This year the four arches are decorated with some 200 used aluminium drink cans.

Village boys also helped to collect the bamboo poles used to build the arches.

“It took us almost four days to complete the four arches that are equipped with the oil lamps,” said Mat, who bears all the expenses that can sometimes reach RM500, depending on the design of the structures.

“When the structure is completed, it not only gives us the sense of satisfaction but also enhances and brightens our Raya mood.”

Mat said the oil lamps would burn throughout the night.

“Come the next evening, the light will be lit again to usher in the Raya mood once more.”

To prevent the lamps from being extinguished in the event of rain, Mat added the cans are filled with kerosene and then topped with diesel.

“This will ensure that the light burns longer,” he said.

Mat’s brother-in-law, Abu Samat, 42, said he never fails to help construct the arches.

“I really love to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri,” he said.

“Whether it was the decorating of the Jalur Gemilang, the Hari Raya arch or the four arches symbolising an entrance sign, I will always be there to offer my help. Together, we can make things happen.”

Abu added his three children also look forward to the annual tradition.

“This is the happiest time of the year as all our family members come for the holiday,” he added.
