Keningau road accidents up this year

KENINGAU: There has been an increase in traffic accidents in the district in the first six months of this year, district police chief Deputy Superinten­dent Ahmad Jawila said.

He said compared to last year’s 373 cases, this year had 425 cases, an increase of 52 cases.

He said accidents that caused damage were the highest, with an increase of 29 cases compared to last year.

“This year, there were 365 cases while last year, there were 336 cases, “he said when launching Ops Selamat, in conjunctio­n with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebratio­n here, on Saturday.

He said cases of fatal accidents had also increased by 11 cases with a total of 23 cases this year compared to last year’s 12 cases.

In the case of severe injuries, there is an increase of four cases to 15 cases this year while last year, there were 11 cases. Minor injury cases increased by eight this year with 22 cases compared to last year of 14 cases.

Ahmad said statistics from Ops Selamat 11/2017 in the district as of June 23 revealed that there were 19 cases, and of that number, two cases involved fatal accidents, one serious injury case, two cases of minor injuries, while there were 14 damage cases.

He said Ops Selamat was aimed at giving road users a sense of conscience to reach their destinatio­ns safely.

It also encouraged homeowners who would be leaving their homes during the festive season to inform the police of their movements, for patrolling purposes.

He said the operation was also to reduce the crime rate and traffic accidents during the festive season.

During the event, Ahmad also presented souvenirs and pamphlets to representa­tives of government department­s and some road users.

Ahmad also flagged off vehicles from several agencies including the traffic police, Department of Civil Defence, Road Transport Department and District Fire and Rescue Department.
