KENINGAU: Singer and actor Haris Baba brought cheer when he made an appearance at the Suman family’s Hari Raya open house at the residence of Hanimih Jamil at Kampung Tudan Baru here.

The Suman family’s open house has always been a festive celebration among guests of various races and religions comprising family members, relatives and friends, and it has become an annual tradition for this family who has lived for over 50 years in this village and in Kampung Bayangan Keningau.

This ceremony has been held since nine years ago and acts a gathering place for all family members back home to spend time together in order to further their friendship and strengthen the family institution.

In view of the fact that they are a big family with many relatives working outside the Keningau region, including in Peninsular Malaysia, they can only meet once a year and this ceremony is the best space for these family members to gather.

Suman has four children, the first son of the late Jamil, the late Haji Mokhsin (second son), Junih (third daughter) and Rusli (the youngest son), and this family has grown immensely through marriages.

This family has even become a 1Malaysia family through mixed marriages with various races and districts. Through a gathering by holding a family Hari Raya open house, all family members including children and grandchildren can meet, mingle and get acquainted with each other.

It has become commonplace for this event to promote the idea of 1Malaysia with the inclusion of all races irrespective of religion and political affiliation.
