‘Tubelight’ ‘rejected’ as collection dwindles — Trade analyst

MUMBAI: Salman Khan’s ‘Tubelight’ flickered past the 100crore (RM66 million) benchmark after a week of its release, reported trade analyst Taran Adarash.

‘Tubelight’, which released last Friday, has been ‘rejected,’ added Taran Adarsh as Tubelight’s collection dwindled after the Eid holiday.

‘Tubelight’ collected Rs. 106.86 cr in seven days, which is significantly less for a Salman Khan-film. Both ‘Kick’ (2014) and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ (2015) collected above Rs. 150 crore in a week’s time while last year’s ‘Sultan’ pocketed a whopping Rs. 229 crore in nine days. The Kabir Khan-directed ‘Tubelight’ aimed to tap audience who loved Salman and Kabir’s 2015 film ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ but critics and movie-goers panned ‘Tubelight’ as a ditch attempt to cash on the ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ formula.

In his review, film critic Raja Sen, who gave the film one-star rating, wrote ‘Tubelight’ “is possibly the worst performance of Salman’s chequered career.” He added that ‘Tubelight’ “means well” but is “rendered unwatchable because of the leading man.” Raja Sen gave Chinese actress Zhu Zhu and Itanagar-based Matin Rey Tangu a thumbs-up. “We get fine performances from bright Chinese actress Zhu Zhu and, most memorably, moon-faced child Matin Rey Tangu, who should have swiftly replaced the lead,” he wrote.

‘Tubelight’ is set during the 1962 Indo-China war and it is the story of Laxman (Salman), who is desperate to find his brother Bharat (Sohail), who goes MIA during the war.

‘Tubelight’ also stars Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and late actor Om Puri. It is Salman’s third collaboration with Kabir Khan after ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and ‘Ek Tha Tiger’.
