MMEA evacuates tree-hit villager from Pulau Banggi

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysia Maritime Enforcemen­t Agency (MMEA) carried out a medical evacuation of a villager on Pulau Banggi in Kudat on Saturday evening.

The villager, Sakil bin Among, 58, was hit by a falling tree and had sustained internal injuries which needed urgent medical treatment.

Sabah and Labuan regional director, Maritime First Admiral Mohd Zubil Mat Som, said a MMEA unit in Kudat received a call from a Dr Wong Biing Sheng, who was based at the Karakit Health Clinic on Pulau Banggi, at about 5.25 pm on Saturday requesting for assistance to transfer the patient to the hospital on the mainland.

“MMEA Kudat operations room was informed that the patient, Sakil, was hit by a falling tree while clearing his farm. As a result of the impact, he sustained ‘p ne um oh a em otho rex’ or bleeding in the lungs.

“As the boat that is normally used by the health clinic is still being repaired, they needed help to get the patient to the mainland for treatment. MMEA Kudat immediatel­y responded and instructed its boat Adal 04 to assist,” Mohd Zubil said.

He disclosed that the boat arrived at the island at 6.40 pm, picked up the patient and they arrived back at the Kudat Marina jetty at 8.40 pm where an ambulance was waiting to take him to the hospital.

MMEA, Mohd Zubil said, is ever ready to assist in any type of emergency situation, adding that those who need help are advised to call MERS 999.
