Contest expected for SUCCC presidency

-

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah United Chinese Chambers of Commerce (SUCCC) is gearing up for its coming annual general meeting (AGM) cum election on July 31.

The association will likely see a contest for the top post given that there are chambers which hope that incumbent president Datuk Seri Panglima Gan Sau Wah will seek another term.

At the same time, there are also chambers who support Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) president Datuk Michael Lui in contesting for the president’s post of SUCCC with the hope that Lui could bring reformation and new development to the association.

Lui recently has issued a Mandarin press statement saying KKCCCI was firm in its decision to vie for the top position in SUCCC.

However, several chambers came up with an alternative and suggested SUCCC life honorary president Tan Sri Andrew Liew Sui Fatt be in the running for the president’s position. By nominating a highly respected Chinese community leader to helm SUCCC, the chambers hope to unify the association and prevent a bitter fight leading up to the election.

The proposal to nominate Liew as SUCCC president was suggested by Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce (LCCC) president Datuk Wong Kii Yii.

Liew has said that he would consider the proposal.

Whether the contest will happen, however, depends on how the situation develops in the next two to three weeks.

SUCCC Executive and Supervisory Committees had a meeting yesterday to discuss preparations for the coming AGM and election on July 31.

However, SUCCC secretary general Datuk Ling Tiong Chai informed the media that the association would not be releasing any press statement when the meeting ended 1.5 hours later.

Present at the meeting were SUCCC Supervisory Committee chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Chong Nyuk Yong, deputy president Lo Su Fui and presidents of the Chinese chambers.
