Pink Ribbon Raya celebration brings women of all races together

-

TAWAU: About 90 women of various races and age joined in the Pink Raya Aidil Fitri celebration organized by Tawau Kinabalu Pink Ribbon on Saturday.

Tawau Kinabalu Pink Ribbon chairperson Christy Fe Salazar gave a talk at the event and urged all the women who attended the gathering to take charge of their own health and one of the most vital ways that women can do is doing breast self examination (BSE).

She said BSE is a way to detect lumps or any symptoms and signs of breast cancer and should be done regularly, especially after their period.

Christy said not only would they learn more about their own breast but will make detection even easier should there be any.

Other than that, she also urged those who are 40 years old and above to do a mammogram, which could play a central role in early breast cancer detection.

She said it is sad that many women, especially those in the rural areas, are still seeking traditional treatment and only seek professional help when the condition is crucial. If breast cancer is detected early and received the right medical treatment, lives could be saved, she said.

Before she ended her talk, besides teaching them how to do BSE, she encouraged women above 40 years old to do a mammogram once a year. Once a lump around the breast is discovered, please seek proper treatment as early attention can lead a long healthy life.

She also thanked Tanjong Batu assemblywoman Datuk Hamisa Samat who was unable to attend, for donating to the program.

Christy also invited everyone to join them this coming October 15, for its signature event - The Pinktober Run - which aims to raise the level of breast cancer awareness and prevent breast cancer through knowledge and education.
