Aug 22-29 trial for man charged with cheating three persons

KOTA KINABALU: The Magistrate’s Court here yesterday set August 22-29 for the trial of a man charged with five counts of cheating.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus fixed the date after the accused, Chong Seng Fui, 35, pleaded not guilty to all the charges under Section 420 of the Penal Code yesterday.

Each of the charge carries a maximum jail sentence of 10 years and whipping and also liable to a fine, upon conviction.

On the first charge, the accused was alleged to have deceived a man by saying that he could set up an air-conditioni­ng unit and a bed at the victim’s house, and induced the victim to give him RM22,000 at Jalan Istiadat at 5.20 pm on March 14.

On the second charge, the accused was alleged to have cheated a woman of RM10,120 in Likas at 12.30 pm on December 6, 2016 by saying that he could help to speed up a house purchase at Taman Sinar Jaya in Tuaran.

On the third to fifth charges, the accused was alleged to have cheated a man over house valuation, stamp duty and lawyer’s payments, and induced the victim to give him RM500, RM4,000 and RM700, respective­ly, at a bank in Putatan between September 1 and 5, 2016.

In an unrelated case, accused Yap Yeh Chen was fined RM3,000, in default, three months’ jail by the same court after he admitted to possessing gambling implements, namely, a pen, 13 pieces of papers with written four digits numbers and cash

The accused was caught committing the offence at an unnumbered premises at Taman Jumbo in Putatan on October 20, 2016.

Inspector Mohd Rasydan Jasni appeared for the prosecutio­n.
