SANDAKAN: A 37-year-old man was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for breaking into his ex-wife’s home to demand money.

Maisal Mohamad, 37, was unrepresented when he pleaded guilty before magistrate Suhaila Selag.

According to the facts of the case, Rosita Ak Ala, 40, lodged a police report on April 29 claiming that her former husband had broken into her home at Taman Harmoni, mile 3, here on April 14 at about 1.30am.

After breaking the door open, he demanded money from her and threatened to murder her by chopping her into pieces if she refused. While demanding for money, Maisal also broke a few items in the house.

Rosita, who was afraid for her children’s safety, took her nine children and left the house to live at her younger sister’s house at the same residential area.

She also claimed that Maisal would often show up at her work place to ask for money.

Rosita and Maisal were married in 1995 and divorced after they had nine children.

She claimed that Maisal, who was a drug addict, was jobless and irresponsible towards his family.

After their divorce, Rosita moved to Taman Harmoni and worked as a cleaner at the same residential area.

Acting on the information, police arrested Maisal on the same day the report was lodged at about 5pm.

Maisal was sentenced under Section 448 of the Penal Code for house trespass punishable by a maximum of three years’ jail or with a fine of up to RM5,000 or both.
