50% off fares of MRT, LRT, monorail until Merdeka

-

PETALING JAYA: Commuters using the MRT, LRT and monorail lines will enjoy a 50% discount starting Tuesday, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Najib added that those using the lines would be able to enjoy the discount right up to Merdeka Day on Aug 31.

He made the announcement when launching the 51km Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) line, which he said would transform public transport in Kuala Lumpur.

“With the integration of the MRT system with KTM Komuter, the LRT and the Monorail, residents of the Klang Valley and Greater Kuala Lumpur will be able to enjoy a more efficient, quicker system,” said Najib in a Facebook post yesterday.

He said a person from Kajang could be in Bukit Bintang in 33 minutes using the MRT, adding that the ride would only cost RM3.80.

“I hope that more will choose public transport to reduce traffic congestion in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

Meanwhile, when launching the second phase of the line yesterday, Najib said Malaysia’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network was considered superior to comparable systems in London and New York.

“I asked someone recently, to rate our MRT, where do we stand compared to others. The person said we are better than London, New York, or Hong Kong. And on par with Singapore,” he said.

Najib also touted the MRT line as the newest and “most modern” MRT system in the world.

With the completion of the second phase, the whole SBK line would be operational beginning 4pm yesterday.

It is now integrated with three different Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines, the KTM commuter trains, and the KLIA Transit.

Najib said the MRT was only the “beginning” of Putrajaya’s plans to improve the country’s public transportation infrastructure.

“By 2027, we aim to have a fully integrated public transportation system,” he said.

The LRT3 is currently under construction and scheduled for completion by 2020, while MRT2 is expected to ready by 2022.

A planned MRT3 is also targeted for 2027.
