PENAMPANG: The newly launched Virtual Dimension VR Experience Centre provides an avenue to stimulate more creatively innovative people in Sabah.

Resource Development and Information Technology permanent secretary Datuk Bruno Vun said the first of its kind centre in Sabah is a platform to introduce virtual reality (VR) technology and the potential it can bring to the state.

This includes the recreation of an actual tourist hotspot in Sabah as a sampler to attract people to visit and experience the real thing in Sabah.

“This is something still quite new and we are trying to capitalize on the technology itself to the Sabah market,” said Vun when launching the centre at Plaza 333 here yesterday.

“The other way (to capitalize on this) is education. Kids do not need to dirty their hands and feet to go to the field and play with earthworms. This (VR) is just for them to practice.

“After they know how to do it, they can actually go down to the ground. We want to encourage them to eventually do it rather than not knowing at all,” he added.

Vun believes that the Virtual Dimension VR Experience Centre has the potential of being the catalyst to the development of talents in other industries as well.

“It can create a community of developers, programmers, photographers and videographers in a whole spectrum of supporting industries as well,” he said.

Virtual Dimension VR Experience Centre co-founder Geoffrey Sinn Chun Hou said VR also provides serious simulation training. “VR is the next generation sport. In the next generation, they will be using VR to do a fusion of sports and gaming,” he said.

Sinn added that the tested method in physiotherapy could also be used to motivate patients to be more active in their therapeutic exercises by transporting them into their ideal environment in the VR.

“This centre will be our starting point to introduce VR to the public. When everyone knows about and tried VR it can be applied to all sorts of industries and segments,” said the co-founder.

He explained for instance, VR can be used to create an interactive experience for visitors at the museum, and a VR simulation of Sabah’s globally renowned Sipadan and Mount Kinabalu could also be used to promote tourism in foreign countries.
